  1. The field hockey in Scotland is called 'Shinty'.

  2. Tracy I believe they deliberately wanted to 1940's music to jolt us out of the show...it was not meant to be background it was me at to make us feel like Clare is feeling...that discord of being in one time while trying to get back to her correct time. I think Carol is correct the non book readers are okay with where Clare is they are forgetting that she would still feel the need to get back, they only had one hour and a few flash backs of Clare in the 40's but a lot more of her in the 1700's the music was designed to make them feel the discomfort. IMO...

  3. Once again, great video – and thank you for making these. Glad Tracey found a way to distinguish between Rupert and Angus. Apart from the clothing, here’s one more point about Rupert: he’s a young Meatloaf with a beard.

Regarding Geillis and her accent: I’ve watched episodes with a couple of newbies, and they REALLY have a problem following the dialogue when the true Scots are speaking, but they have no trouble following what Geillis says. I know this because they look to me to explain what the Scots are saying, and then I end up missing part of what comes after that. I think those of us who are true fans, even when we can’t catch every word, get the gist of it from our knowledge of the books, but it troubles me that non-book fans may have problems understanding what they are saying. So, I really can’t complain about Geillis’ accent if it helps keep the interest of new viewers. Besides, Lotte has made Geillis so oddly interesting!

Regarding the point you guys made about giving Claire respect, I have to say that topic has been the one thing I've come across in all the various commentaries about the show that gets me the most upset. So many fans can only seem to focus on what they know is to come, and are SO convinced that Claire is hot for Jamie already, that she’s lying to herself about how she feels, that Claire is actually jealous of Laoghaire, that Claire has strong sexual needs, blah, blah, blah…but I’d like to stand up for Claire here. In many ways, Claire has already been there, done that, and PROVED her integrity and fidelity. She’s already spent five lonely YEARS in an extremely stressful, sometimes terrifying, life and death situation, dealing with many young men, and with many opportunities to find comfort, relief from loneliness, etc., but through it all, she remained faithful to Frank. It simply isn't part of Claire’s mindset to let herself “go there” as far as infidelity. At this point in the story, she hasn't even been gone very long at all. I think, despite what we know about their future relationship, right now in the story Claire simply isn't allowing herself to think about Jamie the way fans want her to be, and she is seeing this as yet one more relationship with a young man that she is really trying to keep in the “friend zone.”

    ***Spoiler from the Outlander book****

It’s like fans prefer to forget that she was forced to marry Jamie, and that Claire doesn't truly open her eyes to Jamie until after they have married. Yes, I agree that Jamie is her soul mate, and no, I don’t believe Frank deserved Claire, but yes, give Claire the respect she is due!! Ok, now I feel better.

    ***End Spoiler***

This is totally off topic, but when you mentioned Baz Luhrman, I wondered if either of you have ever seen his Strictly Ballroom? It is probably the only movie I can think of where, once it reaches the end, I seriously consider starting it all over again. It’s so feel-good, in a very good and funny way.

Anyway, thanks again for doing these videos. Hope you both have a great week!!

    1. Oh, and Tracey -
My sister teaches high school french, so I think if I showed her this video her homework for you would be to continue watching Jamie say "Je suis prest" over and over again until you get the pronunciation right. What a tough task, right?!?

  4. Oh Lawd, The Gathering! I thought this episode was cram packed full of drama, suspense, humor, you name it! For me it just feels like every week it gets more and more intense. And Carol, tell Tom that there are others out here that feel the same about Claire. I get sooooo mad at her bold and brassy self acting impulsively, opening her mouth and making trouble for every one around her. She does it repeatedly through all 8 books!

Quaich: kwak, long a and that throaty k at the end like the ch in Sassenach.

    Some of my favorite moments:

Mrs Fitz! Loved it when she gave the slam to Diana's character Iona - "Oh, that lovely dress again. Ye wore it so well to the last gathering". MEOW!

When Claire gave the port to Angus:
    Claire: "It's a sedative."
    Angus: "Is that Spanish?"

The Wizard of Oz Glenda the Good Witch incantation Claire gives Laoghaire.

Did you notice the look on Dougal's face during that confrontation in the corridor? After he ran off the guys who cornered Claire. He yearns for the lass! Also wanted to note that he let her go voluntarily. The only reason she hit him over the head was because he was just about to discover her little bag of escape goodies.

Jamie's little giggle when Claire told him about hitting Dougal over the haid.

Je suit prest! Oh Lord, I have a new computer wallpaper!

    Love, love, loved it!

    ValGal

After Jamie spoke his non-vow to Colum, he walked over to Murtaugh. Murtaugh says "I'm getting to old for this". Is that a shout out to Danny Glover's Roger Murtaugh trademark line from Lethal Weapon I? LOL!

BAWLED_LIKE_A_BABY through the scene with Geordie!

When Jamie walked off the field after the game of shinty: "Did we win?"

  5. Thanks for staying up to get this out so early for us. My thoughts.

40's Music- if I had heard Claire humming it I would have believed easier.

JHRChrist in the stable-much better. Jamie's line "No, it's just me" fab!

Changing Clothes- Jamie totally dropped the kilt and was in trousers that we missed out on, just sayin.

Oath Taking- did you see Jamie tapping his finger on his leg before he started walking into the hall. This is one of those details that will make me a forever fan.

Voice Over- not sure if it's changed or I'm just used to it but the "Clairifications" don't bother me at all now.

Y'all's joygasms over Je Suis Prest was just priceless! And was going on at my place too.

  6. Did you catch Ron Moore at the gathering??

  7. Great job - again! DG was great. Nice little kitten fight with Mrs. Fitz...

The 40s music didn't bother me - I thought of it as another part of Claire's narrative. Songs run through my mind during the day so why can't they run through her mind as well? And it makes sense that the songs she knows are big band and swing music from her own time.

    Just like...

    ***spoiler from the future***

Bree and Roger Mac humming and singing the Beatles, etc. in the 1770s.

    ***End spoiler***

This episode was important because it gave us a feeling of the passage of time. If you haven't read the book you could easily think that only a few days have passed since Claire arrived. We see Clair slowly and carefully plotting her escape route while becoming a valuable (and somewhat less conspicuous) member of the community. Nice build up for what is to come...

  8. Potential small ***SPOILER ALERT***

Watch Jamie rub the back of his head while he and Claire discuss Dougal... I love these little clues!

  11. I think the whole Rupert/Angus switch in the 2nd episode it to highlight the friendship and caring b/w Jamie and Rupert. So when Claire (spoiler) asks the clansmen for help towards the end with rescuing Jamie, the decision Rupert makes in helping her will make MUCH more sense than it did in the books. I think that maybe also why they cut to his face randomly sometimes, so as to show his concern for Jamie and sometimes Claire. Like when he is watching her cry alone in ep 3 and his look of concern as Jamie is making up his mind while in line to make his Oath.

  12. The reason Colum looks different in this episode isn't due to his new do, but rather, that he is clean shaven...oooooh. Elizabeth Anne

    1. I just listened to Ron Moore's podcast for this episode and it sounded like he took this opportunity to permanently change Colum's look. Not sure how I feel about that :-(

  13. I loved your joyous opening! I think when Jamie said "Je suis prest", my fallopian tubes tried to reconnect and my post-menopausal ovaries felt the earth shift and tried to re-awaken. TMI? Well then, don't quote me! :-)

  14. Yes, CHRISTOPHER REEVE. I've been saying that since they started putting out the promotional pictures of Sam in Jammf costume. I really don't see it before the hair growing long and in his pre-Outlander pics, but as Jamie? Ohdearlordyes. But not always, you know? It's just from certain angles and with this particularly wide-eyed expression. Like the "Je suis pres" moment here.

  15. I have a confession to make. When I first heard that Sam was cast as Jamie I went out and googled for hours and was horrified. I though he looked like a skinny little girlie-boy. But they sent him to the gym, died his hair and grew it out. The boy has some serious acting chops! And he's a genuinely nice guy to boot. Final Result: YUM!

    1. Not only did his head hair grow out very nicely, I am so relieved that the manscaping of his earlier career has been put aside and he has curly chest hair on his so very manly chest. Yum yum yum!

    2. THUMP! Not sure if that was my heart or the back of my head hitting the floor! That caveman look on his face after he body slammed Dougal at the end of the shinty match knocked my pasties clean off! ROTFLOL!

  16. A comment about the rivalry between Dougal and Jaime during the stick and ball game: I think it was also about their competition for Claire and Jaime getting back at Dougal for accosting Claire in the corridor. He gave a little nod to her after he flipped Dougal. Jen Hyatt

  17. My favorite moment is a very faint line of dialog, just after the Shinty game. I love the way the whole Shinty game devolves into a brutal ball bruising slugfest more a kin to powerful bulls bashing each other with brute force to inflict pain and prove which one is the most powerful "manly" man. Things get so intense that all the other players stop to watch Doogal and Jamie fight it out strong man style with Jamie ultimately besting Doogal, but in a self deprecating way that preserves his Uncle's dignity. But the best line is almost a throwaway when everyone is limping off the field and you hear Jamie say, "So did we win?" Awesome!!!

    1. I also think that joining the game was a way for Dougal to dissipate some of the sorrow and anger of seeing his friend just die a horrible death.

  19. Where can I buy an Outlander brooch? ...and the 'knit bits' and/or patterns of the cozy scarf that Claire wears in episode one?(looks like an infinity scarf) ? And how about those fabulous wraps that Diana wears??

Fellow 'Brit-Freak' author Susan Branch (www.susanbranch.com) as a very pretty site chock full of goodies, including a link to Starz's Outlander clips. I hadn't seen before the lessons on how to speak Gaelic (one straight from Himself!.) Keep watching it for another dose of 'Je suis preste' (moi aussi Jamie!!!)

  20. I was enthusiastic after the first episode, but with each episode that passes I'm less thrilled and I really wanted to like this show.

Claire is depicted as an older, very assertive woman with a high libido who was married to -what I find- a rather boring, stuck-up husband, so why for the love and god she's so crazy about him, I have no clue. As for Jamie, it seems like they want to make him fit the stereotype of a young chivalrous alpha male (which completely clashes with the virginity characteristic I heard about by the way), BUT they're failing in depicting him agressive/assertive enough.

I have ordered the book and I hope they are depicting them differently in there. Otherwise I'll have to wait for the new episodes of Vikings...
