  2. My husband says Jamie was great in Season one but now calls him moose you know from Archie! I just wanted to cry I love book Jamie but I am struggling with tv Jamie why they are doing this to my beloved character I don’t get it. Loved your review Jamie was a wise man the theme is only the women have any smarts Jamie and Fergus are lacking! Wish they would not change source material main character qualities!

Loved Elias character and goat lady! No book spoilers but murder conviction warrant will impact greatly Drums murder charge was not in book! Some I liked but struggled with this episode because of Jamie portrayal as a weak man who makes poor decisions!

  3. My first thought was Carol wasn’t going to like this episode because of all the puking! 😃

I’ll give the entire season a B+. I loved the first season the best. I think because it was strictly told from Claire’s point of view. And I actually like the voice overs and the explanations. I thought the camera work was exceptional also. In this season, I noticed the camera work is sub par in spots. Like when Claire was standing behind Jamie and asked, “Handfasting?” You only saw half of her face. I thought she needed to be over to the left a little more to see her whole face. The pictures bothered me too! He should have stuffed them in his pockets quickly when the captain came in.

  4. Entire time viewing I thought "why have they emasculated Jamie so much?" Claire gets to come to his rescue in the best and most dramatic way possible but all he gets to do is postulate and puke.
Given that he's been a smuggler for some years and prone to lying (even to his family *cough, cough* episode 307) I'd assume he could finesse his way around a ship's captain a bit better than this.

Loved Claire in her physician's role aboard the Artemis though. Elias was amazing. This season has not done Jamie many favors thus far.

  5. I agree with all your comments ... I, also, don't know who the 'red-heided' guy was in the ship's brig .... Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Worst wig yet!
Someone better hire some writers for Sam and fire Tobias’s writers.
I wouldn’t bail out the imposter Jamie.

  6. I’ve been a book and show fan. But lately, I really think the show writers have created two very unlikeable leads that barely resemble the characters I’ve been reading about for twenty years. Claire is condescending and petulant and Jamie is thoughtless and weak. Not sure I can stick around for the next Emmy season when CB will get even more attention over SH, who seems to have to work in spite of the terrible writing, lighting and interest in support of his place in the series. Dg needs an editor, but the show needs writers. I’m so disappointed in their sidelining the strength and nobility of both individuals that forms an attractive and the worthy couple, in favor of the Dr (Claire) Quinn, Medicine Woman show. Sam should cut and run, and I’ll give up Starz, and wait for the next book.

    1. He was in the background in the scene where Claire was deciding whether to jump from the ship.

We now miss the early admiration Claire and Ljg form - in the book. And the surprise of their meeting in Jamaica and learning of William. Now it’ll be about everyone hunting and hiding Jamie again.

    2. Totally missed that!
I thought they had a conversation on deck and that is how she recognized him in Jamaica?

  10. You two are so f****** funny, your video was so good, I am thinking of listening to your video twice! This review so on it, I agree with everything you noted 100% and also loved this episode too. In general, Jamie was great at the beginning of the season when we went through his life without Claire, I agree that he seems out of character now. And "goats need grass" is my new favorite line now. Elias was a sweetheart and he was Corey Feldman too, Claire's relationship with him and his death made this episode. His funeral and his body dropping into the water was very beautiful visually too. Claire's heartbreak over his death was so sad and tragic, her face said it all. WhenI read the book, it was hard to adjust to how the story changed from Claire and Jaime's first few years of marriage, to the future, but I grew to like new characters, setting, conflicts etc., as I read more, I accepted the circumstances. Jamie was annoying in this episode, perhaps they could have salvaged this episode if Fergus called him out more about how he was not being himself and developed the dialogue more about how Jamie couldn't lose Claire again, but with more substance and not so cliché. This could have been Fergus's opportunity to shine and to call Jamie out and tell Jamie how cruel and mean he was being to Fergus. I agree that Regardless of these issues, I did enjoy this episode and I was captivated with Claire and Elias. Thank you, thank you for do this. I discovered Outlander this year because I am moving from Connecticut to Dundee, Scotland with my husband and kids while must husband is at Dundee University (and if you are in Scotland I hope to see you both!). It has been wonderful to share my Outlander psychofreak addiction and obsession with someone. I am reading Echo in the Bone right now. Thanks again, and look forward to seeing you both next week!

    1. Totally agree with how the writers could have at least TRIED to salvage Jamie’s story line during this episode by deepening and expanding the dialogue about how he can’t lose Claire again, and how Fergus was robbed of a moment to shine. The corny lines they were both given were just painful.

  11. Relative newbie here, popping in to say I adore you guys! Your interactions with each other remind me of me and my own beloved, super opinionated sisters lol. You are SO FUNNY and I love your honest and informed breakdowns of the episodes!

I guess to give my two cents, I am actually totally in sync with your assessment of this episode. Some observations:

    - I also loved every second of every little thing that happened on The Porpoise. Elias was precious, Anacka was unexpectedly brilliant, and it was great to see Claire in her element. Containing a Typhoid epidemic completely by herself provided an appropriate time for her to be strong and in charge, as opposed to the irksome bossiness and lecturing she’s been tending toward lately. This episode showed me the bad-a-s-s Claire I love, in a situation where the bad-a-s-s was desperately needed. But on the flip side:

    - Uuugh I’m SO with you on not liking what they did with Jamie’s character! He was completely irrational and even cruel (to Fergus). His plan for mutiny was just plain DUMB and beneath him. When faced with this situation, the real Jamie Fraser would have reined in his temper and come up with something sensible, like, “Hey I understand why The Porpoise desperately needs a surgeon, but I’m worried about my wife being over there unprotected, you’ve gotta let me row over there to be with her.” Or something else reasonable. We the audience know that solution would have led to him being arrested, but he wouldn’t know that, and it would be keeping with his levelheaded character to suggest such a compromise. But no, the writer instead made him act like a darn fool, and I wasn’t a fan of that choice at all.

    - LORD - did anyone else notice that Bear McCreary deserves all the slow golf claps for what he did at the end?? The music that is playing when Claire gets up on the ship’s bow to jump in the water is the SAME THEME SCORE that was playing in season 1 episode 8 when she was trying to get back to Frank and she took off running toward the stones at Craigh na Dune! Honestly, McCreary is a total genius for that! What an amazing callback, and how insanely cool that he made that choice to symbolize how far Claire has come in her devotion to Jamie, and Jamie alone. ❤️

I can’t wait for the next adventurous episode, although I am really hoping they bring back Sensible Jamie. Thanks for another excellent breakdown, ladies!

    1. Thanks for recognizing the musical scoring. I’d never have heard that unless you’d pointed it out. I appreciate that continuity now.

    2. You’re welcome. Despite other questionable creative decisions that are being made, McCreary deserves his props for that brilliant callback.

  12. I can hardly wait each week to hear both of you voice my opinions of the latest episode because we think so much alike. I agree that the jumping back and forth from ship to ship was a little jarring. I think it shows how much they still have to cover from the storyline in the book with so little time left in the season. I expect to see more of it, but it's still like a tennis match at times.

Jamie's uncharacteristic actions in this episode probably stem from the fact that the writer from this episode doesn't have a full grasp of who the whole Jamie is. He needed to read more about Jamie as a total person. This kind of bad Jamie stuff generally happens whenever the show moves out of the book story. It's just a shame because Jamie is so much MORE.

I love that I recognize the parts of ships from Black Sails. I wonder if the production company has anyone from the BS series working with them in filming Outlander this season.

Compartmentalize - well, I, like Carol, totally understand that. My husband battled cancer for two and a half years before he died last year. Actually, I should say WE battled cancer. Being a caregiver is indescribable unless you've actually been through it. You have to learn to compartmentalize or you'll never make it through the journey. I'm glad to hear Tom's prognosis is a good one. Ours was bad from the beginning. Hang in there, Carol.

So, it wasn't a bad episode. In fact it had some really great parts. I especially loved the relationship between Claire and Elias. "Helga" could not have been more perfect.

I do wish the writers would quit straying from the original storyline so much. It creates problems down the road. I also wish they would stay with the true nature of the characters and learn more about them before writing scenes like the the ones with Jamie in this episode.

Can't wait to hear what you have to say next week! Love you ladies!

  13. Hi all,

I hope they show a bit of the reaction to Claire's disappearance from the ship next week. I can picture them questioning Anneke and her shrugging and saying "goats need grass."

I'm so impressed that Claire was able to get the courage to jump, and I also loved the music in that scene. I had just finished Brett Archibald's book Alone where he describes his true account of falling off a boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean during a storm in 2013. He survived for over 28 hours by swimming and was finally rescued. All the details of how hard it is to swim in a turbulent ocean were still in my mind during that last scene.

I also loved the part about the compartmentalizing. My husband has young onset Parkinson's so as a caregiver I find that you do go into that mode when you need to.

Only 3 more episodes left! How did it fly by so fast?

  14. Hi all. I thoroughly enjoy watching you two discuss each episode and look forward to each week's discussion. I am a huge fan of the books and began my relationship with Outlander 22 years ago. All the books of course! And all of the audiobooks! I am taking a very laid back attitude towards the series. I didn't watch much of the second season. Couldn't handle the differences. So I just kept my peace! I realize that the show has introduced so many more people to Diana's work although I hope these viewers also read the books to get the fully fleshed out characters/stories. (I too think DG needs an editor - the US War of Independence is going on far too long for me in the books, for example). I really liked Episode 10 in many ways (I'm a sucker for the medical stuff) but do agree with you about most of the Jamie scenes. And as much as I like Cat and Sam individually as actors, they aren't "my" Jamie and Claire. I like them better separately than together. I'm still not convinced of the chemistry. I thought Cat, however, was truly outstanding in the episode. Claire's WWII nursing experience put her right back into a world she knows so much about, and Cat embodied Claire more for me in this episode nah any other. I loved the close-ups of her face. I was very moved by her silent feelings about Elias. I loved the quick yet profound connection she made with the goat lady (forgot her name). Anyway - keep up the good work! I'm a big fan of yours too.

  15. Ok, I want a stronger Jamie too. I feel the writers want to appeal to the strong Claire thing. Why does only one at a time get to be. Both of them should be.But in his defense he just got Claire back. He is terrified of losing her again. You have to remember travel by ship was a risky deal, even if you are going to the same place.

    SPOILER!
    SPOILER!
    SPOILER!

Ships did encounter storms and get lost at sea. Hint, hint. There was no guarantee he would see her again.

  16. Let me start by saying I love Jamie but he is not perfect and I am so glad they had an episode where he was a jerk. Claire is always criticized and Jamie is the "King Of Men". Well no he is not, he makes mistakes and sometimes he is not so nice, like maybe when he beat his wife and had sex with a girl that said no stop. Everyone has to stop with this Jamie is God crap. I love him more for his faults and I loved this episode. Let go of the books and enjoy the ride.

    1. Amen! He is also the grandson of lord lovat, who we all know was a right bastard. I saw tones of Dougal as well in the way he acted while imprisoned on the ship. I didnt think this episode was out of character AT ALL. But, looks like Im in the minority.

    2. Even if we are in the minority we're still right. Lol

    3. Thank you for this! I am a non-reader and I love to come here and watch the videos because not that many people I know watch the show, but I always get a bit disappointed when I see comments like - that’s not Jaime, Jaime is getting horrible writing, they are diminishing Jaime; it’s all about Claire, etc. I love this show. I love everything about this show. BOTH Jaime and Claire are strong characters and they are both human. They can be jerks and do dumb things but I still love them. I get so protective of them when I read comments here, it’s really strange. I understand it can be frustrating if you have a picture in your mind of what this is supposed to look like if you are a reader. But as a non-reader I am not seeing those flaws. Some episodes have sucked, but for the most part I love me some Outlander. Can all of us agree on that?

    4. You are so right Kim. I love the books but I let it go when I watch the show and I love it too!

    5. Soooo glad to hear some folks here who enjoyed the show and were able to understand the value of those scenes on the Artemis! All of this "That's not Jamie" stuff is frustrating. In the next chapter of Voyager Jamie DOES sneak onto the Porpoise, gets busted by Captain Leonard and thrown into the brig. He has to get rescued by Annekje the Goat Lady (bless her heart!). So, YES, book-Jamie does indeed do foolish things.

      Delete
  17. Also, love you guys but get so upset. The only thing you talk about with the pictures is how pristine they look. You went on and on about how Jamie did not fall apart when he first saw the pictures. No
w he has kept the pictures (which I am sorry, he has kept protected) and did you not see the anguish in his eyes as he looked at them. He doesn't think he will ever see Bree and he thinks he may have lost the love of his life -
Claire. Even the King of Men can break down.

  18. Hi funny ladies!! Thank you for your always-entertaining commentaries! You have the same sense of humor that I do, and I find myself laughing at how much your characterizations mirror mine. I agree that the writing of the past few episodes has not been on par with Season One. Jamie has been pushed to the background as Claire focuses on being Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. I even think that Jamie's hair and makeup keep him from even looking the part of the romantic King of Men that we have all been in love with for years! I mean, what is with his hair?!? WTF??? Please bring back those long curly auburn locks!! We also wondered how the creepy one-eyed man knew that Jamie Fraser was on the ship. When did they stop going by the Malcolms??? Does Jamie even know about the creme de menthe? Wasn't that Fergus and young Ian's doing? And didn't Jamie receive a commutation of his sentence by young Willie's grandparents when he went back to Scotland from Helwater??? My only other fear is that we will have to see Fergus and Marsali having sex!!! Talk about Muskrat Love!!! Ugh...! Just give us Jamie and Claire sex scenes!!!!

  19. According to IMDB, 'Goat lady' is Annekje Johansen, played by Chanelle de Jager. (kind of like Annika, Pippi Longstockings' friend, along with Tommy and Mr Nilsen the monkey. This Norwegian American's favorite kids book)

  20. I couldn’t agree more with you about this episode! That guy MUST have been Fred Frasier, certainly not Jamie. And the key chain... what the heck? But I was screaming WHERE IS LORD JOHN?

  21. Hello
I just wanted to let you know here in Colorado, we cannot purchase liquor in the grocery store. You can only buy 3.2 beer in all grocery stores, and wine in one store in the state and it needs to be able to be closed off from the rest of the store, and have its own store front. So, New Jersey isn’t the only crazy liquor store laws.
I wanted to agree with you that Jamie would not have acted that way on the ship and being in the brig. I did enjoy the Fergus/Marsali story, and seeing her acting like a normal teenager and wanted to be with Fergus like teenagers with hormones.
I enjoy listening to you on Monday morning at work when I am bored, you pick me up and help me get through the day.
