My Outlader Purgatory discusses The Fiery Cross

So my mentor/sister (Twitter Tracey) and I got together over the weekend to discuss the first half of The Fiery Cross... and thought it would be fun to video our thoughts. Let us know what you think!

Discussing The Fiery Cross - Part 2

  1. Really enjoyed the videos! Most of my Outlander discussion takes place with online friends, so it's a novelty to actually hear people talk about the books! :) It's interesting to hear your reactions to things and see how they differ from mine. For instance, I wasn't that upset with Jamie after Claire's moment in the stables with Phillip Wylie (sorry, Tracey). I would love to hear more about what you gals think of the central characters (other than Jamie and Claire)--specifically Brianna and Roger. (I haven't been a big Bree fan since reading Drums of Autumn.)

  2. I so agree with that statement about needing Jamie. I feel the same way I'm more comfortable when I read scenes with him in it. You know and it's kinda like how Claire feels. She feels more comfortable when around him. And I remember what scene your talking about. It is at the brothel that tub they use to distill the liquor

  3. Diana79--I agree with your statement re: Brianna--tho I'm hoping I'll come around a little more with her as I read the rest of the books. She just seems rather spoiled and full of herself to me. It's like she has all the stereotypical faults of an only child--the world in many ways must revolve around her. There is literally a single sentence in Fiery Cross that epitomizes for me everything that bugs me about Bree, but Carol hasna gotten to it yet--I'll explain as soon as she gets there....

  4. Tracey: we'll have to start a Bree discussion one of these days on facebook. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on her. :)

  5. I have to watch the vids again to see exactly what we discussed. Had another meeting (which we've now dubbed "the gathering") with Jenn M, Jen L and Shannon today... and we talk about so many Outlander scenes, it all runs together!

  6. It is so fun to hear other people talk about the Outlander series, and it is also fun to reminisce about what it was like when my roommate was reading them for the first time (she is my Outlander mentee :)). We would have the same kind of intense conversations about what was going to happen, and she would be so stressed out! I would just tell her to keep reading because there was no way that my explanations could compete with Diana Gabaldon's. And about the changing perspectives: Diana Gabaldon is one of the only authors I have ever read who has been able to go from first peron narrative to a different person's third person narrative and do it convincingly. Go DG!......Anyways, I've loved reading your blog and getting to revisit my first experience with the Outlander novels. Thanks!

  7. Thank YOU Jo! And you sound like Tracey! She always says "just keep reading. JUST KEEP READING!" And she's always right. Our mantra is "IDWT" aka In Diana We Trust. She always leads us down the right path, no matter how scary things get at times. And you're totally right about her writing style. I've gotten verra comfortable with it. Last night I was reading a third person narrative from Roger's POV and I knew the second I got to the bottom of the page that the next chapter would be first person from Claire's POV. It's to the point where I'd be disappointed if she didn't write it that way.

  8. I have been thoroughly enjoying your blog, videos and playlist for the last several weeks. When you see Lebanon, TN or Nashville, TN popping in - that is probably me!

I am on The Fiery Cross as well and just hope to be able to catch up to where you are so I can read current blog entries without fear of reading a spoiler. I am finally half way through it so I think we are close. Carol I am like you in looking through the web with one eye shut for fear of reading something too far into the book(s). Keep it up - I LOVE IT! I literally sit at my desk and laugh out loud or swoon reading some of your posts!

  9. Ooooh THANKS Jennifer! Welcome! my friend Jenn is on The Fiery Cross, too - she's "Jenn M" in the comments. She's on chapter 88 (or was as of last night) and I am on 84, I think.. maybe 85 (this darned Kindle!) I have to blog soon but have been crazy the last couple days. I had my book club meeting last night and we had a ton of Scottish foods... it was a lot of fun. I'll keep you posted. I look forward to discussing TFC with you!! :)
