Glenrific!!

Sassenachs...seriously...you MUST watch Monarch of the Glen.  It's such an awesome dose of Highlands methadone...you willna believe your eyes and ears.

Tonight - in only two episodes - I have not only heard my fill of "wee", "och" and "aye"...but I've also heard stories about Bannockburn...The laird's ring (which - if lost - belongs to the clan that finds it)...and RED BONNET (Not Dunbonnet...but still verra cool).  Red Bonnet was thought to be a fairie who "steals into houses in the dead of night and leaves you a clue to what treasure is to be found...and then returns the next night to claim some supper as a reward."

There's even a fellow named Duncan who wears a kilt every day.

I PROMISE you, you will run screaming through your house saying "I LOVE SCOTLAND!"

PS - they also mention "The Big House"!!!

  1. I'm watching, and I LOVE IT!! It's so much fun! And an ocassional glimpse of the laird in his kilt alone makes it worth watching. :) I'm starting Season 4 this weekend.

  5. I looked this up to buy on Amazon.com, but they want $175.00 for the whole set. I wonder if I could just rent it somewhere?

  9. I subscribe to Netflix and can stream the episodes. I love it, especially the character of Golly. It cracked me up when it is explained how he got that name.

  10. Love this programme..for anyone in the uk it's being repeated on itv 3 at the moment...well worth an hour of Anyones time!

I don't know whether it's been shown in the US yet but the BBC did a fantastic series 'garrow's law' based on the life and career of John Garrow the 18th century reformist barrister and politician. It gives a really good flavour of the time and the frankly, hideous legal system that he was struggling against. I have a very soft spot for lord John :-) and there is a beautifully acted episode starring Andrew Scott (col William smith in John Adams) which shows the realities and terror of being gay during the period...I don't often wax lyrical about a tv episode but this one was just breathtaking! Well worth a look on you tube!

  12. Thanks Anon - I will definitely check that out. I am always looking for good shows like this.

    SPOILER ALERT:

L - LOL Hector's hilarious. My husband and I laugh at everything he says. And yet, he makes me so mad sometimes! HE'S the reason Archie's life is upside down and he just yells at him all the time - for trying to save the place! And he's never done anything but live off his inheritance!

LOL I act like it's real. Anyway - I will be starting Season 2 on Saturday. :) Totally worried since Justine showed up at the end of the season 1 finale! It was like "Who shot JR?"!!!

  14. Hector quote:
"Archie, where are our guests? I rather fancy being appalled by Lexie's mother."

  15. Lexie has great lines too:
Molly - ". . . don’t they always say, dear, the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?"

Lexie - "My mother always said it was straight through the ribs with a boning knife."

  16. Carol, getting ready to start Season 2 - renting from Blockbuster. Love it so much - the characters are great. If you're interested, it's (loosely) based on Sir Compton Mackenzie's novel, Monarch of the Glen.
