Dear John

SPOILER ALERT: Dinna read unless you have read chapter 76 in A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES.

This will be a quick one because I must get back to reading. I just wanted to say few things before I forget them.

So I've read more about Lizzie and the Beardsleys. Or shall I say "about Lizzie Beardsley and her two husbands" now that Jamie married Lizzie and Kezzie and Roger married Lizzie and Jo.  I dunno...it's totally creepy... and yet, I can't help thinking "GO TEAM LIZZIE!" I mean - wow. She's got two of the same guy pretty much. Can you imagine the possibilities? Double the dinner being caught. Double the wood being chopped. And double the bedroom fun. FOR HER! For once - it's not a GUY having all the fun! Not a bad deal, I'm thinking. And if Bree could just get the pizza going, it can be "Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place"!

Now... what do the Beardsleys look like at this point? How old are they? 20? 22? Hell if you can make them look like Rob Pattinson I'm thinking Lizzie should just put a big, old "I WIN" sign above her door.

Actually - speaking of Rob Pattinson, I have been thinking of him for Roger for the longest time. I can literally hear some of you cringing - and some of you cheering. It's making me giggle. I dunno... if you can put the enormous monster that is "Twilight" out of your brain for one second, you might be able to see this along with me. He could just do the whole understated, sweet, slightly tortured soul soooo well. Hell - pull Twilight back out again for that matter. Cuz I think I just described Edward Cullen. No WONDER I love Roger!!

OK moving on - had a dream last night that I was MARRIED TO JAMIE and we lived in a HUGE MANSION with lots of gorgeous dark wood moulding. Only problem? HE WAS AWAY - so I didna even get to enjoy or even SEE him. What was weird was that the mansion was very old - and so were most of its' contents - but it was modern times, and I saw Jamie's clothes. And there was a HAWAIIAN SHIRT in his wardrobe. NOT EVEN KIDDING. How funny is that???

OK lastly for now - I am loving  John Grey right now and just cried a tear when I read Jamie's letter, telling him they canna continue their correspondence. I keep finding myself saying "OMG you HAVE to TELL him about Claire/Bree/Roger and warn him about the Revolution!"  Am I the only one thinking this??? Take the chance that he'll think you're a freak because you might be able to save his life!

  1. Glad you are coming around on the Beardsley thing. I love the twist in the story line! And I do love LJG, he is one of my favorites.

  2. OMG Jamie in a Hawaiian shirt. SO CRAZY! What a great dream Carol!

Is it weird that I see Roger as more of a Colin Farrell? I think it's the height and the jet black hair. Or a Ralph Fiennes type. I think he's got to be a big guys to handle braw lassie Bree!

  4. Finally got a chance to watch your chat and the parody on YouTube. Loved them both.
Come close, lasses, I have a wee confession to make. I am obsessed with these books and characters! I changed my credit card picture to Stonehenge. Although, to be fair, it's been on my Bucket List for years.
I also looked at the Claire ring, but couldn't justify $45. plus for it, but when I saw a silver ring at Target that I thought was close enough, I tossed it in the cart as a gift to myself.
What do ye think? Time for an Intervention or am I just enjoying myself?
Re LJG, he's too set in his English ways to jump sides. If he did believe, I think he'd sail his bum back to King George and take William with him.

  6. Cathy I am almost embarrassed to admit this but... I sortof thought "hmmm...I could maybe think this was OK" in a COMPLETELY EFFED UP sort of way, of course, when Claire and the gang started wondering whether she was with them both at the same time. Somehow it seemed ickier when they were taking turns. But I thought "Hell - if she's with both of them - all curled up together - kindof like an ACCEPTABLE version of Jamie and the Indian squaws... well maybe I wouldna mind that so much!"

Sirena - I didna get to see Jamie in the aforementioned Hawaiian shirt tho' - which was a bummer. I only knew it was part of his wardrobe in our bedroom (NICE).

Terry you are SO enjoying yourself! Bask in the fabulousness that is your Outlander obsession! :) I actually dug up a ring I bought in Ireland 10 years ago because it reminds me of "the ring" and have been wearing it. I'd buy the target one, too.

  7. Sirena--for me, Colin Farrell is TOTALLY Stephen Bonnet. Have to dye his hair, but seriously, can't you just hear him calling Bree "darlin" in his dreamy Irish accent and being all sort of hot-yet-scuzzy?

Re: Jamie's letter to LJ--SO glad you got to that part Carol--I've been wanted to discuss. I too shed a tiny tear--it was such a small part, and yet so representative of what is by this point a huge theme in ABOSAA: how the Revolution wasna necessarily how the history books tell it, and how in reality it split apart so many relationships and friendships. I DON'T believe that Jamie was breaking off his friendship with LJ, just saying that it was no longer safe for either party to communicate openly--but still, with that letter you wonder if their friendship can ever be the same. It was all the more heartbreaking given that their correspondence has been so much more a part of this book than in previous books.

Terry: I would buy that ring at Target in a Cross Creek minute. As a matter of fact, I may search for it on their web site! If you are obsessed with these books, you have come to the right place, lass!

  8. I forgot to say that remembering the whole poignant LJ part will help me as I try to get through the first LJ book--I'm on page 44, and it's kind of a snoozer. [ducking...]

  9. Oh yeah, Tracey... he wasn't breaking off the friendship. He was just saying we canna write to each other anymore. I read it three times, just to make sure. And honestly - it was a real turning point for me that I cried. Remember how I HATED LJG after the "Ohhh Johnnnn" manhug in Voyager.

  10. Which book are you reading Tracy? I love Diana's books, but I thought Botherhood of the Blade was a snoozer... Oh well. I'm not a HUGE John fan, so maybe that's why.

  11. Yee. Colin Farrel is TOTALLY stephen bonnet! SO TRUE! How did I miss that? In that case I'm reserving Ralph Fiennes as my Roger. He seems like a nice lad!

  12. Sally--I'm reading LJ and the Private Matter. Up to page 70-ish. Flashes of the LJ wittiness we know and love, but so far, it's basically been scenes where LJ sits around with various characters and summarizes where he is so far with whatever whodunit he's working on. Exactly ONE small Jamie reference so far. I hate to use the words "Lord John" and "snoozer" in the same sentence...but I guess I just did... ;-) I peeked at Brotherhood and it looks like it takes place at Helwater while Jamie is there, so that's promising.

Oh, and speaking of casting? Has anyone seen the Robin Hood trailers out now? Watch them, substitute the names Jamie and Claire for Robin Hood and Maid Marian, and enjoy. DANG. And here I thought Russell Crowe was my ultimate Dougal, but holy CRAP he'd make a good older Jamie.

  13. You are all enablers. So thank you for that!
I was fantasizing about a meet-up to read #8 together and trying to anticipate Herself as to where #8 might take place. Wouldn't it be fun to meet at Yorktown, for example, and tour the actual site while reading?
My Outlander cast must include Pierce Brosnan somewhere.
Tracey, the ring was on a rack in the jewelry dept. at Target. I think the line was called "Inspiration". Mine says "Imagine, believe, receive" inside, but not in Gaelic.

  14. Tracey,

I read Brotherhood of the Blade and thought it was a snoozer too. 1Jamie scene, that's it. I'll keep trying with the LJ books, but, not a huge fan. Diana says the LJ books and the Outlander series are one big "story" so I feel that I have to read them to get a full perspective, but, I'm not really motivated to read private matter right now. 15. Tracey R., I have read all the LJG books and I think Brotherhood of the Blade is the best. There is quite a bit going on it, but most of it is not at Helwater. However, the scenes at Helwater are great, not be missed. I don't remember if LJG and the Private Matter is the one where John goes to Lavender House, but if it is, pay attention to one of the people John meets there, as this person will show up in BOTB and Echo in the Bone. I have read comments from readers being confused when reading Echo because they had not read any LJ books, so I thought it would help.

I can't wait for Lord John and the Scottish Prisoner, which is suppose to be from John's and Jamie's POV.

  16. Terry - To your point of Pierce Brosnan in an Outlander - YES!*pumping fist*
I see him as Brian Fraser in my "Outlander movie" :)

  17. I am currently in a love-fest with Pierce Brosnan (as well as Andy Whitfield from "Spartacus") and plan to see him in "Remember Me" this week.

  18. Jennet--thanks for the advice! Just finished LJ and the Private Matter this morning--am definitely wondering who from Lavendar House you're talking about! I have a few guesses tho....

  19. Terry - I'm right there with you with the Outlander obsession. I also looked at the ring online and now I will get myself over to Target to see if I can find the one you're talking about. I'm also so glad I found this site; it totally feeds my obsession. Between this and compuserv, I don't have time to do anything else online!

  21. My Roger will always be Matthew Goode. Yum.

And I agree with Tracey. Colin Farrell as Stephen Bonnet. Saw it in some YouTube casting video once and it stuck. ;)

  23. Hi Carol and Tracey. I can't get on board with Lizzie and the Beardsleys. It's far too creepy and I'm far too much of a prude. I can't abide bigamists. Aaaanyway I know this is years behind everyone else but I can't believe nobody has done a happy dance over Roger and Jem's matching moles on this post yet. Really??? That's what I shed a tear over :)
