He Said, She Said

SPOILER ALERT: Dinna read unless you've read chapter 80 in A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES.

Here is the email I - not two seconds ago - sent Tracey:

CHRIST ON A CRUTCH!!!!!!  Shannon and I are at the part where HUGEASS PREGNANT BITCH OF A HO, MALVA accuses Jamie of knocking her up. Claire ran out - Tom Christie asked for money and Jamie's coming to the realization that he's in deep doodoo.

I am not even for ONE SECOND going to even CONSIDER that Jamie did anything wrong.

I just don't know how Malva knows about the butt-scar.

MMMMMPPPPPHHHHHMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!

  6. I don't know how I would handle something like that, but I will say that I was really bummed that Claire lost it and ran for the hills. I just hated the message that sent! No matter what, I know Jamie could never, never have done anything, period. I know Claire knows it too, so I kind of wished for a little show of solidarity there! But if it was way too much for me to process, I can imagine that Claire just couldna handle it!

  8. Re Claire running off: I will summarize Diana's posts from Compuserve. Dinna go there-it's Spoiler City-but Claire runs away when confronted by strong emotions she can't express verbally. Remember when she found out about Leoghaire? Same thing.

  9. The thing is, tho, she had good reason for running off when she found out about Laoghaire (who we like to refer to as "Wee Ho")--because Jamie really did eff up in that instance--he was marrit and he hadn't told her. Black and white, crystal clear EFF UP.

I'm thinking that that incident--combined with the fact that Frank was a whoring fool--did more damage to Claire's psyche than maybe we realize. Don't get me wrong--I think she trusts Jamie to the last breath of her being. COMMA HOWEVER--there's always going to be that teeny tiny kernel of her brain that tries to eff with her and whispers "he didna tell you the truth before...." Maybe she needed to get away if only to smack that kernel upside the head and talk herself down. But at however subconscious a level, that insecurity is there--it definitely shows when Jamie (who, BTW, really needs some schooling in "when is the right time to confess the truth and what is the best way to go about it") then starts to tell her about Mary McNabb and she nearly cuts off his bih-ness.

ALSO, and Carol and I discussed this last night, other insecurities are at play too--namely, that she is no longer a spring chicken and that all these accusations are coming down from the fairly hot, nubile Malva (who shall henceforth be known as Wee Ho, the Sequel). One of the many things interesting about that scene is that for the first time, you see otherwise confident, "I'm so proud of my flat stomach and killer-for-my-age bod" Claire admit to herself that she has grandma arms. She sees herself objectively, the way others probably see her--not the way Jamie does--and it completely gets to her.

So many interesting things about that scene!!

  10. So complex! Sometimes I also think she's had to bear SO much living in those crazy times. Every day is a new insane adventure and danger lurks etc.... A review I read online noted that not much happened in (I think it was) the Fiery Cross, but I love any time they get to spend that's a little bit more boring and uneventful. They deserve boring and uneventful. I think Claire just couldn't take it anymore!

    1. MULVAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! (Shakes fist towards heaven, scowling fiercely). Why that little galladh! I couldn't hate her any more! But seriously...how did she know about the butt scar?

  12. Re the butt scar...she had to have been skulking around, at some point, when he was naked. Perhaps while tending the fire under the still?
Also, I think there may be a tiny kernel of doubt, for Claire, because she woke to Malva and Jamie standing by the window, with Malva's hand on Jamie. The niggle of jealousy was already there.

  13. Oh my Gawd!!! Usually I base my reading milestones according to your blog. I'll check what the next post is about and read up until then. But this time I got to chapter 80 and just COULD NOT stop reading until I was one hundred percent certain without a shadow of a doubt that MY JAMES ALEXANDER MALCOM MACKENZIE FRASER (step back ladies) was innocent. So I read until chapter 83 and while I'm also still waiting for an explanation on the butt scar, I am reading again.

I do, however, have an uncontrollable urge to do my own bit of time travel, find the admittedly fictional "wee ho the sequel" and bash her head in.

Is she somehow connected to that love spell Bree stumbled on many chapters ago? Good grief and now Ian is mixed up with her too! If she is responsible for that love spell then truly I don't blame Ian for being afraid to fall asleep next to her.

P.S. DG is a goddess. This is probably my favourite of all the books now. So much has happened and it keeps going from strength to strength. The gathering is far behind me and may we never go back!

  14. I was on another board looking at what they thought as well about her knowing about Jamies scar and saw DGs explanation for it. I figured it was those ways it could happen. I am of the mind of most of the folks on that board that Jamie would never cheat on Claire. There is one person there that said this though It wouldn't be a stretch for DG to smack us in the face with something horrible like that though! To me it would be a stretch for her to do that. I mean for example if Jamie were to go to a tavern and pick a woman up and then sleep with her when the woman he loves is at home not only would Claire not be able to forgive him neither would the fans and pretty sure that DG wants us to continue reading her books and not stop cause of something like that. Yes she is bound to smack us with other horrible things but I can't see her ever doing that. The only times he ever had sex with other women were when Claire was gone forever as he saw it and one of those was because he had to do it to protect his fam just like he sadly had to do what he had to do to protect Claire back in 1st bookd with BJR Ugh. There were other many opportunities for him to stray from Claire book 2 on and he hasn't and I can't see DG doing that to one of her two most loved characters Jamie and screwing up Jamie and Claire. What do you think about all that. Like I said I can't ever see him willingly sleeping around on her she's the love of his life.
