    1. Reposted with additions: About Twelve Years a Slave - I chose to read the book while listening to the audio tape first and then I struggled to watch the movie because it does not capture the whole essence of the story. First published in 1853, “Twelve Years a Slave” is Solomon Northup’s harrowing memoir of being thrown into slavery. It is riveting and told through his eyes. Book is very short and there are some scenes that are disturbing. That said, you learn a ton in those scenes about the slave experience. Carol, you seem to like accuracy in writing so I know you would appreciate it.

  3. The wig was OK I guess but he really needed a shave. Tell Tracie's husband to run out and get some razors.

    1. Agree...Jamie would have looked better if he shaved.

  4. Spoiler....Jamie rescued the poor slave the same way in the book and when Claire is horrified to own a person he pretty much says, Well, you wanted me to save him

    1. But somehow, I also heard that comment from Jamie in the same way as his other, 'but you told me to' comment. Sounded not as if he meant to please Claire. Sounded like Jamie was Claire's subordinate fox pup, rather than peer. EWWW. I prefer the King of Men Jamie, I guess.

  5. Tracey I felt the same way and rolling my eyes that Jamie is arrested yet again at which I'm sure Lord John will get him free. However, I loved this episode can't wait to see who is wearing the bad wigs in the finale.

  6. I being one of the minority being a non-book reader, had no idea Gaellis was the Bakra. Until I watched a sneak peak video lest week. ARRRGGGHHH! To who or not to wig on the powdered wig debate isn't my ideal Jamie or LJG. My question is what is the protocol as to who needs to where one. Jamie didn't wear one in France. Fergus didn't wear one in Jamaica. Is it an age thing? The whole "Threes Comoany" segment was the best. Looked Claire's stink eye looks. I don't think Jamie told Claire about LJG and his feelings. She didn't know about the gem. HMMMMM. Now about the 200 year old baby, my guess is that it must be Bree. She was conceived in the 18th century and born in the 20th so the math would be 200 years. Here's another hues. The bones that Joe had in his possession.....Gaelllis? Somehow Joe is connected in the family. I am not looking forward to my first droughtlander:>(

  7. I'd asked in the comments of an earlier episode recap whether or not I should read past the Voyager book—in large part b/c of these soap opera-like endings/cliffhangers (i.e., Jamie being carted off to jail, AGAIN). If the premise of their story revolves around Jamie and Claire continually getting separated ("oh no, will I ever see him again?") I fear I'll lose interest. It's too gimmicky for me. In fact, I saw a recap headline referring to this episode as a "semi-repetitive storyline" and I completely agree. Are the rest of the books semi-repetitive (will they/won't they be together?), or do the characters evolve and mature? Again... I REALLY want to like the books; I love getting lost in storytelling. Even as I dare to ask the question, I know Outlander is backed by a huge fan base, so there must be something compelling keeping everyone's interest for several more books. I'm going to start Drums in Autumn soon, so I guess I'll answer my own question(s) LOL.

Gaeillis' wig—I think she is way too skinny so the wig looks like it's falling off her head just like everything else on her due to what looks like malnutrition. I feel bad even suggesting that, as I have no idea what the actress' wellness status is, but when you see her standing next to Claire, who looks healthy and filled out, she doesn't look well.

I'd love it if you guys carried on with other things during Droughtlander (Poldark = yes, please!). Also, Carol, do you enjoy reading anything other than historical fiction?

Thanks for another fun recap! I enjoyed it very much! :)

    1. P.S. Despite some issues I have with the repetition, I'm still onboard and intrigued with this season. I hope I don't sound too snarky above. I'm so curious to see how they're going to pull it all together. As far as I know, it's only a one hour episode, right?

      Delete
    2. Not snarky at all, I'll say understandably frustrated. Yet another intance where Jamie is held back figuratively and literally. It seems like every opportunity to let Claire shine and save the day, is taken. Here we have capable, brave, able, Jamie needing to yet again need to be rescued.

    3. I would say that it definitely is not a recurring theme in the following books as far as Jamie and Claire being together. They do evolve and mature, and it is not repetitive or gimmicky, so read on with no worries! Diana herself said she wanted to show the maturation and dynamics of a long marriage, and explore far beyond the "meet cute" and honeymoon-era romance where so many stories end. Read all the books, for sure.

    5. Does anyone else have the sense that Jamie has turned into a secondary character in this series? Each week it feels like Catriona's show with maybe an appearance by Sam and latest guest performers. It could be that as a reader, I'm still looking for the couple and their goals to be the plot drivers. Maybe a Tv watcher who hasn't read the books has different expectations?

  8. Love this episode! Lord John is a favorite of mine too. This part of the book was so weird that I am glad they changed it. The whole serial killer thing n Margaret being crazy. I also love that mr willioughby ( I know I spelled it wrong) wasn’t wacky n screwing Jamie over. You guys are so great, I’ll miss u during drought lander. Glad to see Tom ring the bell! Get some rest Carol.😊

  9. Gals, I would really appreciate it if you could correct my city in the live feed. It used to say Vancouver, B.C. but lately it's been Maple Ridge which is a tiny community and far away from where I live. Thanks and congratulations to Tom for ringing the bell!

    1. Hi Anon, the change is actually happening on your end for some reason as Feedit is just a widget I have on the site to show people how far our Outlander universe stretches. I am actually showing up in a town that's about 45 minutes from my house right now, too. I suppose it pulls from different locations of my Internet Service Provider.

Feedjit gives the option to delete your IP address if you prefer not to be listed. Just click Real Time View at the bottom of the widget. That will open another page where you can click "Remove your IP" at the top. :)

ALSO - this is a pretty neat site that lets you pinpoint your location, hide your IP address, and all sorts of other cool things: https://whatismyipaddress.com.

PS - Thank you so much. 😘

  10. As to your questions about Truth Serum being real, there is something called Devils Breath that has been used to rob/assault/kidnap people in South America. Its a powder that is blown into the face of unsuspecting people, often tourists, since they don't know about it. Once you breath it, you are still conscious, but you will say anything, you become completely docile, and you can't resist. Its pretty terrifying, and its real.

  11. Another week laughing outloud along with you two, "Bend and snap!" Hahahaha, love it.

A couple of comments this week:

First, a very emphatic ix-nay on the ig-way! No no no, I believe in the books Jamie never powdered his hair or did the wigs, I was always glad to read that, he was his own man not being swayed by "foppish" styles etc...

I'm so glad Mr. Willabee is treated with more respect for tv. Remember the whole graphic descriptions of foot mutilation in China and what men found sexy about feet? YUCK!

DG fascinates me for many reasons, but in particularly how she weaves history and fiction. Years ago we went to an all-inclusive in Jamaica and I was intrigued to find myself in Rose Hall. The "Legend of the White Witch of Rose Hall" is really played up for tourism. John Wayne even wrote a song about it, read the lyrics if you can. It turns out its more fiction than fact but is full of voodoo, affairs with slaves, and various husbands dying under mysterious circumstances. The fact that DG can weave that into her own stories FASCINATES me, she's a genius!

I agree, the Margeret/Ishmael story line is going to be mixed somehow with Mr. Willabee. Does that mean his storyline is going to be cleaned up a bit, he's too likable now to do what he did in the book. It'll be interesting to see how they tie up sooooo many storylines in one episode.

Thanks again for another entertaining recap.
PS- so heartwarming to see Tom ring that bell!

  12. I think in the book Jamie not only wears a powdered wig but red high heeled men's shoes to the Governor's ball.

  13. Hi Ladies, Another hilarious recap. Carol, so glad your Tom got to ring that bell! I hope “the cancer” is gone forever.... Steven Berry, our Lord John, is in an Australian TV show called A Place to Call Home. S5 is airing now on Acorn tv in the US. My local public library has all 4 seasons. Steven plays a closeted gay man in the 1950s. His name is James. He is married and has a son, so it makes for a lot of drama. Maybe that’ll help y’all through the upcoming Droughtlander!

    1. You have definitely piqued my interest for something to watch during Droughtlander; thanks.

I found that the show is available for streaming on Amazon video, for $19.99 per season. Or subscribe to Acorn TV on Amazon for $4.99 per month after 7-day trial.

  14. Hi all - I liked Sam's wig - it lent him an air of gravitas. Also really liked the smoldering look he gave Claire after they were watch Fergus and Marsali.

Has anyone seen the movie Amazing Grace? It tells the story of William Wilberforce's fight to end the British slave trade, so it's a good tie in with the slavery issue in Outlander. It's a really inspiring film and has a great group of actors that include Ioan Gruffudd, Benedict Cumberbatch and Rufus Sewell.

One more episode left, sob. Guess we have to consider that we will be one day closer to the DVD coming out.

  15. Thanks T and C, for taking the time during your crazy-busy lives to dissect the episode and entertain us with your banter while doing it! I CAN.NOT.BELIEVE we’re coming up on the final Season 3 episode, the time has flown by, as usual. During Droughtlander I will be faithfully looking forward to whatever MOP plans! My planned fill-in shows: The Crown, Victoria, Game of Thrones (not really a fill-in, right up there with Outlander for me...) and I might actually watch Black Sails, on Carol’s recommendation. But I’m getting ahead of myself...for now, I’m curious how they’re going to tie up Voyager next week. See you then!

  16. Hi C and T, I'm new to the blog and can't tell how much I've enjoyed getting show feedback from two book readers. You both make me laugh!
Carol, I totally agree with you that the show would benefit from having a "fan consultant". It would add so much in keeping the show on track with the books. Long running series tend to derail when all the actors start drinking their own kool aid, then become executive producers who want script approval on everything and ultimately steer away from the heart and soul of what the show was based on......the books! Don't get me wrong. I love Sam and Caitriona.
I'm sad drought-lander is upon us but am going to catch up on the season 1 and season 2 of My Outlander Purgatory!
Keep up the good work ladies!

  17. Hello T and C, i laughed put loud at you guys and your descriptions of people and thier nicknames this morning. I would have to say the final script is never the final script in the writers room or even on set, changes are always made. I have enjoyed the cold opens this season, for me it expands the world and we see it frpm a different perspective. And having Lotte's entrance to be so over the top fits so much with Gellis. I loved it and thought whT a great way for us to first see her again.

Sam and Cait were great and did a great job, and i was wondering if Sam was having too much fun in the sun yhat is why his make up looked so strange.

Carole congratulations on finishing the radition treatment for Tom.

Keep it up A nd have a great holiday season.

  18. Yeah Tom!

    Random Comments:

Love tv Mr. W as compared to book Mr. W! This is a good change.

The looks in this episode, oh the looks. Jamie and Claire, Jamie and LJG, Claire AT Jamie and LJG, Young Ian with The Bakra (lmao ... I have to laugh so I can endure it as a BoyMom, the idea of the scene skeeves me BIG TIME).

The slave auction was AGONY to watch. AGONY. Horrific.

I can't believe that we're almost at the end of Season 3. Bah! Any word on when Season 4 MIGHT run? Any word on if Outlander has been renewed past Season 4?

Again - Yeah Tom! God Bless!

  20. Thanks, Ladies, for the video. I agree the wigs are distracting but fun. People wore them then and they were filthy and gross!
I appreciate the plot change for the show. The book got tedious in Jamaica, and I see Jamie gets out of prison by the previews of next week, so Lord John must let him go. I wonder how much they'll show of the escape? I LOVE the ending in the book where they realize where they are. Will there be a hurricane?
Jamie's the hero, not Claire. Stop making her the hero, Ron: Claire is telling the story of the beautiful love between her and Jamie. Diana says it's the story of a couple. Claire is telling THEIR story.
Yes, the show needs a few fan consultants. I'm available.

I wonder if there will be a Claire-correct by season 4. I like how the writer's have edited the complicated and uncomfortable story-lines. But I'm just not that interested in watching a show about a fictional woman super-hero/cartoon character. The relationship is what makes the books and the show special.

  21. Hello ladies,

I didn’t get a chance to comment last week so first let me say a big congratulations to Tom for making it through all those treatments! Will continue to send positive thoughts your way!

I enjoyed this episode - the look that Jaime gave Claire gave me goosebumps! And well as a non-reader it was quite a surprise to see that Geillis has turned into a super freak. I can’t believe we only have one episode left!

I don’t know that this was directed at me last week, but I am a commenter that does get vocal about all the “this isn’t Jaime” comments. I can assure you I am not a member of any PR team. I am a microbiologist in Cleveland, OH.

I think that as a non-reader I am as passionate about the show as readers are about the books. For me, it drives me crazy that a lot of book fans are so rigid. This is the show. It is going to be different. Have I loved every minute of this series? Nope. I think they cram a lot into 13 episodes. But when I make a comment I am trying to convey how I see Outlander through these “virgin” eyes and that imaybe it isn’t coming across like you think it is/ as bad as you think it is. Perhaps this isn’t the place for someone like me I don’t know.

    1. THANK YOU, Kim! I just read this to Tom and he totallyyyy appreciates it. 😘 And yes, this is the place for you! We love comments from non-book readers; they keep us in line! LOL Seriously, we especially like hearing opinions of non-book readers; good, bad, or indifferent. I can imagine it gets old for you to hear people (us, included) complaining about Jamie because your only Jamie is "show Jamie" and you love him and just want everyone to leave him alone. I haven't read the Game of Thrones series but it's one of my favorite shows, so if people bitched about Tyrion Lannister weekly, I'd get annoyed, too. So never fear, sister. We get it. Keep watching and keep commenting. It's all good. 😘
