Another gift to book readers: after Mandy's birth, Roger's first words to her are "Hello, little Otto." That was the name he and Bree gave to their baby before she was born.
So many things to unpack! The continuity in this episode plainly sucks! If William has grown up, why is Jemmy still so young?! Jemmy was around and young when William was 9 or 10. Now he is a young officer in the British army, but Jemmy is still a pre-schooler! Also, back in the season when Brianna marries Roger, why did they dress the set with Spanish moss? Doesn’t exist in the mountains of North Carolina. That’s when my “belief” in the program was over! Also, I have been to Ocracoke on many occasions, and the ferry from Ocracoke to the mainland of NC took us 2 hours! And no, there aren’t fireflies like that in theSouth. I can’t take it!!
I don't think Bree had gone through the stones yet when William was 9/10 and visited the Ridge--remember that J/C were still living in the cabin and the Big House was not built yet. That said, I do think Book Jem is a bit older when they go back--but also, I don't know that Book/Show William is more than 18 or so at this point. So it's a little off, but not by much. ALSO--just learned that those fireflies DO exist in NC--see https://www.romanticasheville.com/fireflies?fbclid=IwAR1dD4pgglFun2g578_P_uwYMWxunXQuqYYlYpqtRonXVXd_f4rZU_V7Zpc Who knew???
Fireflies used to be that thick in the south, as recent as 60 years ago. Just because they aren’t now doesn’t mean it wasn’t true at the time of this story and long after.
You girls had me crawling on the floor laughing about the cleanest birth scene I was struck by as soon as baby is out Claire and Jamie leave the room I’m lik whose gonna catch the afterbirth
RIGHT??? And I didn't even consider the afterbirth, lol. I guess because it's Bree, they just figured she'd deliver her own afterbirth and use it to invent something...
Lol! I thought the same thing!! And Jamie would never be in there while Brie was giving birth. He would be pacing back and forth in the outer room. That scene was just rushed. They are trying to cram so much into a these short seasons and it shows in some of these scens.
Great recap! I do believe they had Donner waiting alone for Claire so they could discuss time travel without the others hearing. His posse wouldn't help him if they thought he was a witch. And speaking of witches, are they trying to portray that Jemmi and the baby have supernatural powers!?
Tracey - did you know that Lisa Clarke, the director of Episode 702, is a Call the Midwife director?????!!! I did not know this until a few minutes ago. She directed season 5 episode 6 and season 6 episode 5 as it happens. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2256603/bio/?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm It's why I found your comments about the birth scene (and callbacks to Call the Midwife) so funny. Lisa should have known better for sure :) I am so happy you Girls are back, podcasting about Outlander. Always a complete joy to see you.
Ha I did NOT know that!!! Too busy obsessing over Lisa Clarke not being my college roommate Lisa Clark, lol. But yes, you are totally right--if she's helmed two episodes of CTM, she's filmed AT LEAST four births.
I love your comments, it’s almost as good as rewatching the show with you. Totally agree about the birth scene; I’m a Call the Midwife superfan too.
I do think it’s one of the best book to screen adaptations done, though I feel each season gets more “tv sensationalized” to keep non book readers attention.
The Frasers need a Rollo. They say the best alarm is a barking dog and Rollo never would have let those b#$t@rd$ slip in the house.
The fireflies/lightening bugs were a bit much so I suspended belief and let it represent the magic bond between Jamie and Bri. I didn’t even recognize Mrs Bug as the one helping bury Alan at first and the whole gold popping out at the end was kind of weird.
The leaving broke my heart and used up all my tissues. Still have a bit of a problem with the “estateness”of the ridge. It is heartrending when Jamie gets to physically love and be present in a bairn of his kin, but that stable looked like it came from Helwater. I guess I picture a little more rustic on the ridge. P.S. Don’t like book or tv William yet - sorry Carol🙄. Didn’t like Bri at first either.
Jamie did give Lord John a stone when he escaped from prison and swam to the Island looking for Claire . (Season 3 - All Debts paid) . Also I believe when they were in Jamaica and they meet again LJ is still wearing the stone.
I have listened to your podcast/video for years and looked forward to your recap as much as the show. I enjoy the personal pre-show format as it’s like chatting with my friends. But I have always loved the banter and knowledge you have of these books. I started reading them over 20 years ago. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. If I’ve had a bad day I can always turn to them to give me a chuckle. Thank you again!
I actually loved this fast-paced episode. I may be in the minority, but I’m all for picking up the pace and getting things happening! So much good stuff is coming up in the books, and I can’t wait for the All The Things that go down in Echo to start the chain reaction.
Hi! Want to get everyone’s opinion regarding Jamie’s dream of seeing Claire in the future. I thought this was definitely pointing to the scene with Claire and Frank on their Honeymoon. Claire is sitting at the vanity brushing her hair and outside down below is Ghost Jamie looking up and Frank brushing iinto him. Jamie says he knew the light was different and that he saw Claire sitting at a “desk”. I know Jamie never goes to the future, but I can’t figure out how Diana G will explain Ghost Jamie. So good, can’t wait to find out in the last book!
Before Bree and Roger tried to go back the first time, Jamie told her that she had a brother and showed her William's picture.
ReplyDeleteBree says in the see "I have seen your picture." So that tells me in the show she knows.
