Building off the Grid

SPOILER ALERT: Dinna read unless you've read "The Drums of Autumn" by Diana Gabaldon.

I am watching a guy named Joe Donovan on DIY ("Building off the Grid") build his own house – from scratch – in extremely rural Montana. Why am I mentioning this? It is reminding me of a certain awesome, fictitious couple who came to the US with nothing but a dream and the clothes on their back, and built a life for themselves on The Ridge.

Holy crap, I think I'm tearing up. ❤️

  1. Carol, I grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and spent my childhood on various excursions to Old Salem, which is the historical district of Winston. Its a lovely restored (maintained) Moravian community village.

When the Outlander family would leave Fraser Ridge to go for supplies, I always pictured them heading down the mountains to Old Salem. But isn't that one of the amazing siren lures of Outlander, the uncanny way we as readers and fans can personalize the material?!

If you ever travel through NC, I would definitely put Old Salem on my to do visit list. Its a charming 18th century walk through time. You can eat lunch at the Tavern, close your eyes and imagine Jamie and Claire walking through the door. Oh...and make sure you go to the bakery for some Moravian cookies!!
