The Making of the Exile by Diana Gabaldon

Holy mother of god on high. Water. PLEASE!! I NEED WATER! Something! SMELLING SALTS?! HOW am I going to STAND IT when this graphic novel comes out?!? I'm dying already!!!

  1. Let me be the first to say "OH MY GOD"

I've not really been too interested in the graphic novel but looking at those picture's I might just change my mind and get a copy.

I especially love the picture of Jamie in the first set. He looks sooooo beautiful!

  2. Just realised that we are looking at two different things! Duh!

I've been looking at Amazon which has some of the panels which I've not seen before:

Keep scrolling down the amazon page!

  3. Louise - that's what Tracey and I were looking at in this video:

  4. I have an issue with the graphic novel and potential movie that I'm wondering if anyone else shares? Here it is:

I LOVE Harry Potter, I LOVE Twilight, but I take huge issue with the transformation into movies. All can pretty much agree, I think, that movies do not measure up to great books, for several reasons. First, a movie is an hour and a half to 3 hours long. There isn't space to fit all the awesome details and story lines of books into this short time frame. Second, and probably my biggest issue, is that I really hate having other people's visions of characters and places in my head. I am a visual reader, though don't get a firm grip on what a character looks like. I don't mind this because the words define them for me. But when an actor is introduced as a favorite main character, I normally am disappointed. The misty faces in my head are always so much BETTER. It's really hard for me to push out the actor's faces and remember the hazy perfection of the characters in their raw book form. Aside from not meeting my expectations, the books can tell me their facial expressions just as the author wanted them. Such details get diluted or discarded on film.

Because of these reasons, I have chosen not to see the last several Harry Potter movies or ANY of the Twilight movies. The HP characters are now solidly the actors, which I don't mind probably because I can't remember my hazy HP ones anymore. The twilight actors I've managed to avoid enough to be able to think of them as separate from the books. But with all the publicity of the movies, it’s a struggle to hang on to the images that I got from the books.

I really do not want to have to work to maintain my vision of Jamie, my vision of Claire, Brianna, Roger and all the rest. The graphic novel and all this talk of prospective actors for a potential movie make me really nervous. I don’t want a director’s or anyone else's image of Jamie and Claire. I want the book’s, and what my mind provides based on the books. Why aren’t the books and our own imaginations enough? Am I alone in this??

    1. No! Not at all. I have the same issue, the characters aren't ever really defined but as you put it, hazy. This is why, when Iactors that portray these characters constantly thrown in my face, I lose the hazy ideal that's all my own & suddenly the characters are someone else's devising. I didn't mind the graphic novel so much but I'm a little afraid of the theatrical rendition... More so of the publicity, because as with twilight, which I also loved, no matter how hard I tried to avoid it, the publicity was never ending and now Jacob is not Jacob but Taylor Lautner (who was nothing like the very tall, native Jacob in my mind and altho Robert Patterson is very handsome, he's now concrete as Edward and well, I liked my Edward better (he was all mine before the actor came around because he was a product of mine own imagination) and most unfortunately of all, Bella is no longer Bella but Kristin Stewart. =( I must keep my Jaime and Claire!

  5. I second that, Elizabeth. I do want to read "The Exile", to get Jamie's perspective, but don't really wish to see the pictures. I don't think I can have it both ways, though. Sigh...

  6. Has anyone been able to find the original wedding night scene that is supposed to be on Diana Gabaldon's website? I can't seem to find it, but I'm wondering if they're waiting to put it up. :)

  7. WOW, where do you find the kind of thing?

Elizabeth, I share some of your same feelings.

  8. Estee, I don't think it's been posted yet. Probably waiting for the launch of the new-and-improved web site, which is supposed to be coming soon.

  9. I'm confused. Who is in the plaid in panel 5?

  10. HOLY HOT SCOT! (loving the first panels of Jamie!)

  11. Melody - that's Jamie - although i'm thinking it could pass for John Cusack. ;)

Elizabeth and Danette - I agree with you whole heartedly - and yet - I'm dying to see a movie or series. It's crazy. It tugs at my sanity, honest to god. I often say I need to reread Twilight (again!) because the films have taken over my brain. I have a Twilight site - - and I (usually) don't post about the actors's personal lives - with the exception of the occasional RPattz post because he's just hot and I canna help it. I have tried but I am just not immune to the gravitational pull of Robert Pattinson.

As for Outlander - I can only hope they do as good as job as (I feel) they did with The Pillars of the Earth. I thought most of that was spot on. In fact - it introduced me to the talents of Eddie Redmayne - my current crush extraordinaire - so in that way I'm grateful for the adaptation.

Harry Potter - I have only seen the movies... but plan to read the books at some point. But you're right; I'll have Daniel Radcliffe in my brain while reading, for sure.

  12. oops, I should have said page 5 or grouping 5. Is that Murtagh in both the last 2 pages shown?

  13. Squeeeeee! all I can say.

I cannae wait for the 21st.

    Actually I will say something...
I was a little nervous scrolling down to see the sketches of Jamie, desperately wanting him to look like I picture him in my head. I was releived to see that he looks very much like I see him when I read Outlander. The second sketch is the best, imo.

  14. Hi Carol,I just noticed on your profile that you are a Capricorn. Me too. Jan 19th

  15. Sae mother effin' hot.

My love has reached a whole new level. I'm like the grinch whose heart has grown three sizes too big.

Can I print out his picture, frame it and put it on my night stand? Do you think my husband would be ok with that?

  16. There is a limited edition glicee print that the poisen pen bookstore is taking orders for now. It's by the same artist that did these. Only 100 available. The only trouble is you can't see it before you order it but they say it's really good. I'm sure Jamie must be in it, maybe Jamie and Claire. I want one but don't like the idea of not seeing it first. What to do??

  17. I am so freakin' excited for this graphic novel, and I'm not a graphic novel type of person at all!!!

I've never pre-ordered from Amazon before, so does anyone know if pre-ordered books arrive on their release date, or are shipped on their release date? I'm counting on having this thing in my hands on 9/21!!

  18. I love it! Totally love it and am so psyched for this! I've been reading comics for a long time and still read Archie's all the time! :) So - this is right up my alley!

  19. Melody--Yes, it's Murtagh in those frames. He's the one who sees Claire come through the stones.

I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED I CAN HARDLY CONTAIN IT WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Let's be honest here.We ain't going to get an actor who looks exactly like this drawing of Jamie are we?

He doesn't exist in real life because he's far too perfect! However I do think that Andy Whitfield comes about as close as we're going to get!

I nearly fell off my chair when I was watching Spartacus and he said (I'm paraphrasing here) "If I need any instruction I'll ask" reminded me so much of the wedding night scene even thought he was talking about gambling at the time but even so.

  21. OMG!! I didn't realize about the 1/3 of the book part. I want to go to the launch party so bad, tickets are only $30 and that INCLUDES the book! Of course, I'm supposed to work until 7. I really really really am contemplating asking for the afternoon off... I don't want to miss this at all.
